The iPad was just announced along with retail and data plan pricing. Believe it or not, the iPad is getting much more favorable pricing from Apple and AT&T compared to the iPhone.
iPad Pricing
As an iPhone user, I now expect more from Apple.
This is what I don’t understand: A no commitment / no contract 16GB iPhone 3GS costs $599. However, an iPad with a significantly faster processor, larger screen, and all the additional features will retail $499 for the 16GB model. How can the iPhone cost more than an ‘iPhone with a bigger screen’ ?
AT&T gives the iPad better pricing
AT&T will be offering 3G data plans for the iPad starting at $14.99/month for up to 250MB transfer. Why isn’t this offered for the iPhones? We’re forced to purchase the unlimited data plan at $30/month. The iPad will be getting unlimited data for $29.99. Sure it’s just a penny difference, but the iPad also does not require a contract.
iPad is unlocked, unlike the iPhone
Here’s the other gotcha. Not only is the iPad cheaper, it’s unlocked as well and can be used on other services unlike the iPhone.
I don’t know about you but I’m now expecting better pricing from both AT&T and Apple once the new iPhone is released this year.
